Tanaïs and Entropy: the green room
site-specific installation documented through the medium of a virtual tour
Parc de Tanaïs, Blanquefort, Suburb of Bordeaux
Installation created in a workshop with 15 students from the University of Bordeaux 3, 2010
The disused military camp of Parc de Tanaïs was chosen for the creation of a temporary installation, based on a proposal created by Anne Laure Boyer, workshop guest artist. In 2010 this military camp was found disused, dispersed throughout a 97 hectare park. 150 abandoned buildings were being progressively engulfed by vegetation. In a similar fashion to giant ‘camouflage’ wall paper, we dressed these ancient buildings with giant posters of exotic landscapes, affixed to the walls. This creation was designed to explore the poetry of invasion and change, to create desequilibrium between inside and outside, the real and the imagined, appearances and disappearances, culture and nature, order and disorder. To emphasise this visual blurring, and to take the idea of intrication further, we mixed the walls and their environment by covering them with photographic wallpaper. This artwork was produced together with a group of 13 people, mostly students, over the course of 4 days spent in their entirety in the park. Located in the open air in the Parc de Tanaïs, the artwork was shown for 4 months, up until the time of its complete destruction by the elements. The course of this installation was documented using a 360° virtual visit, shown as a video projected exhibit and on the internet.
